Travel Prices Decrease 8.1 Percent in March

The Travel Price Index, TPI, for March 2009 decreased 8.1 percent compared to March 2008. Lodging prices were down 8.5 percent compared to last year and up 1.5 percent from last month. Airfares decreased 7.7 percent against twelve months earlier and 0.5 percent from previous month. The Consumer Price Index, or CPI-U, was down 0.4 percent from March 2008.

Developed by the U.S. Travel Association, the Travel Price Index (TPI) measures the seasonally unadjusted inflation rate of the cost of travel away from home in the United States. The TPI is based on U.S. Department of Labor price data collected for the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI). The TPI is released monthly and is directly comparable to the CPI.
